Johnson Pond Dam, Byram Township

The Johnson Pond Dam had an undersized spillway that did not comply with the NJDEP Dam Safety requirements. A new spillway was designed to allow the emergency spillway design flood to pass without threat to the structure of the dam. The work included the construction of a gabion spillway to supplement the reconstructed concrete spillway. The spillway design needed to accommodate the existing stop log structure to control the level of the pond. The dam reconstruction was completed in the months before Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and successfully passed the high flows with no damage or erosion to the area surrounding the dam.
